One day after the October 7th attack, on October 8th, 2023, Hezbollah began firing rockets, missiles and drones from Lebanon at northern Israel "in solidarity" with Hamas. Israel responded, and a war of attrition began along the border.
About 60,000 Israelis were evacuated from towns and kibbutzim near the border, such as Kiryat Shmona, Metula and Shlomi, and many stayed away for more than a year. Tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon were also displaced. Farms, forests and homes on both sides were damaged.
In September 2024 the conflict escalated sharply: thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded, Israel carried out heavy airstrikes, and Hezbollah's longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in Beirut. In October Israel launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon. A ceasefire agreement took effect on November 27th, 2024.
Since then residents have been returning and rebuilding, and the north is welcoming visitors again. The Galilee, the Golan Heights, Safed, Acre and Rosh HaNikra remain some of the most beautiful parts of Israel, and tourism is one of the best ways to help the communities recover.
